Devlog #6 - Rejected by the MTA
I Got Rejected
We've all been there, bummed out after a rejection. No, I'm not talking about getting friend-zoned or dumped (if you're in this situation, I feel your pain). That's a topic for another day. I'm talking about an application I wrote a few weeks ago to the MTA.
How Did I End Up Here?
So, a few weeks ago, I was doing my casual research on Subways and on the MTA, when I stumbled upon this page. The gist of it was that if you wanted to do anything with an MTA-trademarked or IP (intellectual property), you just have to obtain permission. I didn't know if it would apply to me and my game, but I was going to send an application anyway. (to prevent me from getting into big legal trouble) With that in mind, I was going to write a simple letter to try to charm the transportation giant. I knew it probably won't work, I mean... giving a scrawny teenager a license to your multi-billion company is a pretty bad idea... Anyway, I took a shot. At the end of the day, I'll at least be able to get one person remotely interested in this project. (For privacy reasons I will not include a screenshot of the email)
Are You Mad?
I'm not mad.
Honestly, it was a learning experience. I don't intend to make anyone reading this feel bad for me. Neither do I intend to make anyone reading mad at the MTA. (if there's anyone reading this post that is) That's not the point, if something doesn't go your way, you move on, you can't just expect things to always work out in your favor. When something goes wrong, for better or worse, you have to adapt. Therefore, my purpose in writing this is to help others and have them learn from my shortcomings.
Therefore, the "theme" of my experience is:
Don't expect the things to go according to plan, but still plan ahead, that way you can see obstacles long before they are due. (sorry if this was cringe)
Aftermath
I will have to make some cosmetic changes to the project, for me to be legally allowed to release this.
I will need to remove a lot of MTA themed items.
- Metrocards
- MTA themed signs
- Route indicators (like the circular things with the letters in them)
I will get to work on these changes ASAP and re-update my itch.io page accordingly. This will push development back by at least a few days, but I'll have to live with the consequences of not doing my research.
Anyways, thanks for reading to the end, there will be no progress devlogs this week, as I haven't made much progress (mostly just debugging).
Happy Coding & Gaming,
Mootbing
